Dr. Nikolaos Vlachos was born in Athens in 1965.

  • He graduated from the Medical School of the University of Athens in June 1989 with highest honors.

  • After completing his military service and rural medical service, he was accepted by the State University of New York, USA.
  • At the University Hospital of New York, USA, he specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology (1992–1997), where he obtained his specialty title from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (Board certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology).
  • In 1997, he was accepted as a Fellow at Johns Hopkins University, USA, where he completed a three-year subspecialty training (1997–2000) in Reproductive Endocrinology.
  • His subspecialty training (Fellowship) in Reproductive Endocrinology included intensive education in the diagnosis and management of pediatric and adolescent gynecology problems, congenital anomalies, all assisted reproduction techniques — including IVF, GIFT, and ICSI — as well as advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgical techniques.
  • In July 1999, he was awarded a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and was promoted to the academic rank of Instructor (equivalent to Lecturer).
  • In 2000, after written and oral examinations, he obtained the subspecialty title in Reproductive Endocrinology (Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist).
  • In July 2000, he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor (equivalent to Associate Lecturer in Greece) at Johns Hopkins University, in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • From 2000 to 2004, he served as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, USA.
  • In 2001, he assumed responsibilities as Co-Director of the In Vitro Fertilization Department at Johns Hopkins University and as Director of the Endometriosis and Laparoscopic Surgery Department, where he specialized in the surgical management and reconstruction of congenital anomalies of the reproductive system.
  • In September 2004, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the 2nd Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Athens, serving as Head of the Assisted Reproduction Unit.
  • In December 2010, he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and assumed the directorship of the Endoscopic Surgery Unit at Aretaieio University Hospital.
  • In May 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Full Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Assisted Reproduction at the Medical School of the University of Athens.
  • Since September 2019, he has served as Director of the 2nd Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical School of the University of Athens.

The professor has been honored by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopy (AAGL) for his outstanding skills in laparoscopic surgery. In 2004, he was awarded the title “Top Doc in America for Endometriosis and IVF.” He has also been nominated for the honorary distinctions Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care.

He has authored more than 100 scientific publications in the most prestigious journals of his specialty, as well as a manual of Laparoscopic Surgery accompanied by educational videos of the most common laparoscopic procedures. In addition, he has contributed chapters to eight scientific books. He serves as a reviewer for several leading scientific journals in the field and has organized numerous training seminars on endoscopic surgery and in vitro fertilization.

His main areas of focus are: infertility, assisted reproduction, IVF, endometriosis, endoscopic surgery, and the surgical reconstruction of congenital anomalies of the reproductive system.
